Born in the little Roman town of Chester-le-street, County Durham, to Brian and Maureen, Robson grew up with an elder sister and two younger brothers, both of whom made football their careers.  He was educated at Birtley South Secondary Modern School, before moving to Lord Lawson of Beamish Comprehensive School.  He captained his school team, as well as the local county team, and had trials with some of the bigger clubs before signing on with West Bromwich Albion as a 15 year old.
He signed professionally with Albion in 1974, but remained in the reserve team for nearly all of the following season, only called up to play for the final three matches and scoring in two of them.

Robson played with Albion in what turned out to be a sporadic career, with irregular starts and several injuries hampering his progress.  At the end of the 1980 – 1981 season, Albion offered him a renewed contract of £1000 per week.  Robson declined and put in a transfer request.

On 1 October 1981 Robson moved to Old Trafford to play for Manchester United in what was then a British Record Transfer Fee of £1.5 million.  He played his debut match on 7 October 1981 in a 1 – 0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur.  His first goal came on 7 November 1981 in a 5 – 1 win against Sunderland.
Robson became Captain of United and in 1984 he signed an extension to his contract worth around £1 million and tying him to his team for a further seven years.  He remained with them until May 1994 when he moved to Middlesbrough as a player – manager. His football playing career came to an end in 1996.

Robson’s International career started at England youth level, before he received his call-up to the senior side on 6 February 1980 in a match against Republic of Ireland, a game which England won 2 – 0.  His first senior International goal came with his 13th cap in a game against Norway on 9 September 1981.  He played consistently for England until 1991 when he played his final International match against Turkey.

When his football playing career finished, Robson went on to manage Middlesbrough, Bradford City, West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield United.  In March 2008 he returned to Manchester United as an ambassador, helping to promote the club’s charity work and commercial interests.  In September 2009, Robson returned to football management, taking the role as coach for the Thailand National Team and will remain with them until the World Cup in 2014.
